Searingly beautiful submitted by jiyoungachoi on July 18, 2024, 12:59pm "Human Acts" is a fictionalized retelling of the Gwangju Uprising, which took place in May 1980 in South Korea. Han Kang zooms in on one particular victim, a young boy named Kang Dong-ho, and the people around him -- his mother, best friend, etc. Through their perspectives, Han Kang weaves a brutal, vivid tapestry of the uprising's events, as well as the enduring trauma endured by its survivors. Kang's prose is brutally beautiful. She pulls you in close and forces you to experience the whiplash of humanity's capacity for immense bravery and hideous violence.
