"In a village at the edge of the wilderness of northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year, a stranger with piercing blue eyes presents a new father with a gift - a precious jewel on a delicate chain, intended for his young daughter. Uncertain of its meaning, Pytor hides the gift away and Vasya grows up a wild, willful girl, to the chagrin of her family. But when mysterious forces threaten the happiness of their village, Vasya discovers that, armed only with the necklace, she may be the only one who can keep the darkness at bay"-- Provided by publisher.

Very Good Storytelling submitted by kathscot on July 6, 2018, 10:56pm Explores the tension between the new and the traditional with wonderful mood and plot.
Unexpected! submitted by admaclean on July 21, 2018, 11:07pm This was a book club pick that I didn’t think I’d enjoy. Boy was I ever wrong! Who knew a Russian fairytale setting could be so captivating? Once you get past the naming schemes of the characters (a bit confusing), it’s quite the journey!
Fantastic submitted by mowjac on July 27, 2018, 8:29am A strong voice, a strong heroine, a well written setting with a sense of history, time and place, this blew me away. Enjoy!
Strong submitted by lstorc on August 27, 2018, 9:23am This was a strong, detailed, historically balanced adaptation.
Mystic Folklore submitted by me11yagn on August 26, 2019, 2:52pm Very amazing book. There were a lot of historical and mythical references.
Russian Folklore inspired submitted by wickedcellist on July 19, 2023, 3:12pm A fascinating read, this tale features a strong female lead, desperately trying to save her village. It explores themes of religion and persecution. Great start to a trilogy.
