Thorpe--Carlisle submitted by michrigan on February 22, 2017, 7:59pm This is one wonderful book because it combines biography, track and field, football, a wide variety of other sports, social commentary, individual characters who played a most important part of history, American and otherwise. Often missed is the importance of the school for "American Indians", the Carlisle Technical College in Pennsylvania. Seemingly a school to help Native Americans become a functioning part of American society, in practice it's actions meant to take away all vestiges of the children's culture by constant punishment for things like speaking their own language rather than English. Their hair was cut off at the braids and the children fought hard to find ways to get around this. Only a small number ever graduated since the school was started in the 1890s, though many went on to graduate from a number of prestigious schools. Thorpe is the center and some of the highlights are his dominance of the unbeatable teams of Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and Pennsylvania. He also won gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, but were taken away when he was determined to have played a short time in minor league baseball, even though many athletes in the Olympics had done similar things. His own coach Pop Warner turned his back on Thorpe who never said a bad word about his coach. The awards were eventually given back in the 1980s.. He was named the greatest college football player up to 1950 and the greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th century. I recommend this book highly to children and any adult.
