Fifty years ago Malcolm X told a white woman who asked what she could do for the cause, 'Nothing.' Michael Eric Dyson believes he was wrong. Now he responds to that question. If society is to make real racial progress, people must face difficult truths, including being honest about how Black grievance has been ignored, dismissed, or discounted.

To read this is definitely to be preached at... it genuinely is a sermon

There’s a lot of great information and perspective in this book, but it definitely comes packaged in the framework laid out right in the title: it’s a sermon. To read this book is definitely to be preached at. On the other hand, White people have been screwing up this race thing and this “treat others the way you want to be treated” and Golden Rule idea for as long as this country has existed. I’m not so sure that being preached at is the wrong way to hear the message.
Particularly for those who come from a faith perspective, Dyson’s framing may be a powerfully accessible entry point to understanding race in the US from the lived perspective of a Black man who wants us to know history, and make the future better.
