"The Refugees, is a collection of perfectly formed stories written over a period of twenty years, exploring questions of immigration, identity, love, and family. In The Refugees Viet Thanh Nguyen gives voice to lives led between two worlds, the adopted homeland and the country of birth. From a young Vietnamese refugee who suffers profound culture shock when he comes to live with two gay men in San Francisco, to a woman whose husband is suffering from dementia and starts to confuse her for a former lover, to a girl living in Ho Chi Minh City whose older half sister comes back from America having seemingly accomplished everything she never will, the stories are a captivating testament to the dreams and hardships of immigration"--Provided by publisher.

Engaging Collection of Short Stories submitted by ekjensen on August 30, 2017, 10:24pm This is a comfortable and easy going read that captures the essence and variety of experiences of Vietnamese refugees. Therefore, it tells of the human spirit and the trials and tribulations of a people scarred by war and their adjustments/interactions to Americans and their way of life. Highly recommend.
Good submitted by zmclaugh on July 8, 2019, 7:28pm Quiet, interesting stories of Vietnamese refugees. Some better than others, but all depicting what it means to move to a new country.
Stellar Writing submitted by flemingj on June 26, 2021, 9:25am I really understand why this author gets all kinds of accolades. You will really feel the layer of sadness running through these stories.
