Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this enmagicked girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. To keep young Luna safe from her own unwieldy power, Xan locks her magic deep inside her. When Luna approaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule -- but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon, it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her -- even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she's always known.

Beautifully written middle grade fantasy submitted by abenson on June 18, 2017, 4:37pm This Newbery winner combines rich fantasy storytelling with a wonderfully realized magical setting, memorable characters, and unexpected moments throughout. The author does well integrating familiar fantasy elements with unique ideas: being "enmagicked" through moonlight, a friendly swamp monster, and multiple villains (none of them being the witch). This story and developed magical world has layered meanings that we can find relevant within our world today. Highly recommend to all readers, particularly fantasy lovers grades 5-adult.

loved it submitted by acgottfr on July 7, 2017, 9:36am The girl who drank the moon is a really good book. The way the author combines magic, love, fantasy, and adventure is really intriguing. It makes you want to not stop reading.

Great submitted by ashflowtuff on July 21, 2017, 11:01am This was a great story. Really fun to read.

So Amazing submitted by Nancy Bulkley on June 24, 2018, 10:55am My Library teacher Rachel Erdstien recommended this book to me. I've read it to times. Both of my best friends have read it; and loved it! This is and amazingly written book. But I recommend it to older kids 4th and up maybe.
Thank You for the Recommendation Miss Erdstien!!

Seriously, this was the best of the year? submitted by FordAlpha on July 11, 2018, 10:45pm The first couple of chapters read like a mashup of things I've read a dozen times before. It got a little more original later on, in parts, but the world-building entirely lacked coherence and the ending dissolved into a pile of mush.

A great book submitted by Sarahcaps on July 21, 2018, 4:03pm A great book that has a lot of details and expresses them in a good way.

AMAZING submitted by sophia_2005 on July 22, 2018, 7:27pm If you like Harry Potter and magic, you should love this book. Totally recommended.

Not my type of book, but I still liked it submitted by rmsuggs on July 26, 2018, 10:00am Fantasy isn't really my genre, but I still enjoyed this book. It is certainly gripping. And I appreciated the "moral" lessons in it. Yes, I'm a grown-up---in fact, I read this book right after my baby daughter was born. I started it in the hospital. If anyone else is considering this as birth-recovery reading, I recommend you choose something different, and save this book for a time when there is emotional distance between you and babies.

Great submitted by aer on August 10, 2019, 12:22pm So good loved it

Great Book to Read With Your Kids submitted by frappysnail on August 31, 2019, 11:31am I was really pleasantly surprised by the storytelling of this author and the pace and timing of the chapter breaks were just about perfect for reading to my daughter each night. Like others have stated there is depth to the story touching deeply on the strength of love over dispair and selfishness, without (IMO) being at all preachy. We both thoroughly enjoyed reading this and it is one of the few books I am recommending anyone within earshot to read.

Story of emotion submitted by Susan C on June 14, 2020, 9:47am This story has deeper meaning than the words it uses to tell a story. Upon reflection, it is a good life learning.

Good read! submitted by LegendaryBookworm on July 28, 2021, 1:33pm This was a really interesting book, with neat characters, a great setting, and a very magical vibe. I'd really recommend it!

beautifully written. submitted by graytabby on August 1, 2021, 10:11pm I could not put it down: 5 out of 5.

Amazing book submitted by mccleerye on August 27, 2022, 3:38pm This is by far the best youth book I've read all year and one of the best books I've read all year period. The characters are loveable and layered and simply amazing.

Beautiful but heavy submitted by apknapp on June 12, 2023, 7:20pm This was some excellent writing, and very moving. So moving, in fact, that I almost didn't finish it--I had to keep reminding myself that it's YA and would almost certainly come out all right. The story is ultimately full of hope, just got pretty heavy at times.

A really good read submitted by Noight on June 15, 2023, 9:14am 4.25/5

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a solid read. The characters all have their struggles which are intertwined, and the story is told in a way that kept me wanting to find out what happened next.

I found this book a really cozy read and it was so whimsical. The only reason why it's not rated higher is that I didn't think it was a masterpiece or anything.

A finely woven story submitted by Diananana on June 29, 2023, 8:32pm Wow! I love how the stories of the different characters are developed separately and woven together, much like a tapestry. The themes of magic, love, sorrow, lies and consequences are threads that run throughout the book. I will not say any more lest I spoil the mystery of it. This book is head and shoulders above the average middle grade fare, and deserving of the Newbery Award.

By the way, playing Point-o-matic Review Reviewer is a great way to discover interesting authors and books. That's how I found this one. I will be looking for more titles by this author.
