finding your voice while coming of age submitted by camelsamba on June 25, 2018, 11:11pm I suspect I would have enjoyed this more had I not just read The Hate U Give. This book felt meek and almost cliche in comparison. That said, it does tell an important story about race and class and finding your voice while coming of age.

The title reflects that the main character (Jade) is a collage artist who is figuring out who she is. Like Starr in _The Hate U Give_, she attends a private school outside her neighborhood. Jade's relationship with Sam (a new girl at the school who she shares a city bus ride with) accentuates issues of race - although I must say I thought Jade was a bit incurious about Sam's background. Where did she come from all of a sudden? Why does she live with her grandparents? Maybe Jade thought it would be rude to pry? The relationship between Jade and Maxine (her mentor) focus on issues of class. I did like Jade's point about how the 'opportunities' she is given (e.g. the mentorship, test prep classes, etc) so often seem like attempts to 'fix' her, especially in comparison to ones she wants (the Spanish spring break trip). The most powerful aspect is how Jade learns to speak up for herself - to her mentor Maxine, her Spanish teacher, her best school friend, among others. I hope teen readers (girls especially) will take that to heart.
