Before We Were Yours submitted by SBNB on June 16, 2018, 3:47pm This is an amazing book. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it. Some parts were difficult to read as a mother of young kids, but even so, it was a great book.
Good book club submitted by cannonsr on July 16, 2018, 8:43pm This worked well as a book club read. Agree with sbnb that it's difficult to read, even without having kids.
excellent story - riveting and well written

Excellent book about a horrible occurrence in the world of adoption in America. While the characters and stories are fictional, they are based on real experiences, horrifying as that may be. It's hard to believe that "normal" people can treat children and their parents so miserably.
Still, this is not a horrible book to read -- far from it. It is written well, the characters are well-developed, and it focuses on the strength of human spirit in the main characters. I found it riveting, and I couldn't stop reading it. I listened to most of it as an audio book, and the reader was very good.
Before We Were Yours submitted by camieroper on July 6, 2019, 4:37pm A true page-turner, the fact that this book was based on real-life experiences made it wrenching. The main character is around 12, and ends up in charge of her 4 little siblings when they land in an orphanage-type home. Everything is an uphill battle, from getting enough food each day to surviving on the playground to eluding abuse. I liked that the tale was interwoven in alternating chapters that were decades and generations apart. The author keeps you guessing about who is related to whom, who will survive, and how it is all interconnected. There is also a love story intertwined that enhances it. This was a very good book!
Excellent book - horrific topic submitted by smgop on July 8, 2020, 8:29pm This was extremely well-written, and the heartbreaking thing is that it is based on true occurrences! I couldn't put this book down.
Fantastic albeit heartbreaking at times submitted by JennJenn on July 31, 2020, 5:58pm This is an excellent book. It will draw you in and keep you reading. At times you can hardly believe that things like this would be permitted to happen. Worth the read!
heartbreakingly beautiful submitted by beckleystover on August 13, 2020, 11:49am Oh how this book has stuck with me. this is a book that made me want my 5 best friends to have read it as well so we could discuss - would be perfect for a book club because there is just so much to discuss! It is a beautiful story of a heart wrenching topic
Couldn’t put it down submitted by msarah on August 7, 2021, 9:27am This book was well written, immediately drew me in and I couldn’t put it down. Great summer read or would be perfect for discussion at a book club.
Beautiful and sad submitted by zwachtel50 on June 12, 2023, 8:07pm I really loved Before We Were Yours. It’s beautifully written, and the intertwining of present day with the experiences of the children was very well done. Extremely sad but very hard to put down.
Heavy and hearty submitted by Bethybeth07 on July 21, 2023, 10:36pm This book is not a light read. It will suck you in and give you an emotional roller coaster and leave you thinking about it many months later
