"Published simultaneously in Canada by Thomas Allen & Son Limited."
"One morning, Deming Guo's mother, an undocumented Chinese immigrant named Polly, goes to her job at the nail salon and never comes home. With his mother gone, eleven-year-old Deming is left with no one to care for him. He is eventually adopted by two white college professors who move him from the Bronx to a small town upstate. Set in New York and China, the Leavers is the story of how one boy comes into his own when everything he's loved has been taken away--and how a mother learns to live with the mistakes of her past"-- Provided by publisher.

ggod submitted by Zaneeba on June 27, 2019, 8:44am i love how thi book relates to my life

It's been a while... submitted by sushai on June 23, 2020, 12:21pm since I've picked up a book and from the very first page had trouble setting it down. Without knowing ahead of time what the book was about, I just started reading and went along for the ride. I did not realize how much ground it would cover, how much it relates to US politics of the day, and how much I would see the characters as real people. Ko does such a good job of this. There are no heroes and villains, but a lot of well-meaning people who falter. It's reassuringly human.
The questions in the back (of my Kindle copy, at least) are excellent, as is the very short interview with Barbara Kingsolver, who she thanks in the acknowledgements and is also a favorite writer of mine. I recommend this book for a reading group as there are so many possible discussions.

familial connection and cultural longing all wrapped up in a deeply moving book submitted by abhiparekh on June 14, 2022, 1:46pm This book had me hooked pretty much from the start. Such an easy, followable writing style— I liked that one of the perspectives is in first and second person and the other is in third person. The characters are lovable and flawed and you want to root for them. And it especially warmed the second-generation American part of my heart.

Beautiful submitted by pratibhamahesh on August 27, 2023, 11:06am Beautiful story about love, hope and family
