Content warning: rape, torture (some light gore)
This novel has huge ambitions, throwing several classic science fiction and fantasy tropes into a blender, with varying degrees of success. Though laden with some significant flaws, the result is incredibly gripping and makes for quick reading, if for no other reason than curiosity about how Drayden interweaves demigods, robot sentience, and various coming of age narratives into a single story. The disparate elements do work, for the most part, but the inherent rules of magic in Drayden's universe are difficult to get a handle on and one science fiction element disappears completely from the landscape as another development (apparently?) serves its purpose. The parallel character development arcs work well together until the (100+-page!) climax and the characters are well drawn; even the antagonist creates some moments of genuinely funny humor in their vanity. This book is far from perfect, and relies too heavily on convenient plot elements, but it is a page-turner.
