review submitted by yinan on August 29, 2017, 2:18pm The book looks very interesting

Funny at first... submitted by bookher on July 18, 2018, 2:32pm This book started out funny and I had high hopes but it just started to feel like major whining about how bad life is but she doesn't really care. I only read 1/2 the book because it was getting so annoying.

This is one of my favorite books! submitted by emilyhubbel on August 1, 2018, 3:57pm Irby's writing is both humorous and sobering. The book progresses from lighthearted observations to deeply personal accounts of her life. The book deals with poverty, disability, having an abusive home life, race, and navigating life as a black queer woman. The whole book is written in a style that makes you feel like you're casually talking to a friend, while still being extremely witty and insightful.

A Must Read submitted by jucruz on July 6, 2019, 3:44pm Her rambling style is so approachable and enjoyable, it gives hope to all aspiring writers

Read the audiobook submitted by sushai on June 23, 2020, 12:10pm Hilarious, heartbreaking, dark, and luminous. I identified with so much, cringed often, and laughed out loud more than I can remember from any other book.

Not for everyone submitted by chowcy on August 28, 2020, 4:53pm I wanted to like this book as it touches on some important real-life issues (disability, race, LGBT issues), but the author is a little brash and not for everyone. I personally did not like her negativity, but I can imagine others appreciating her real-talk style of writing.

Loved it submitted by lizgiessner on July 23, 2023, 3:52pm This collection of essays is personal, funny, and wonderfully written. Set in Chicago, it includes human truths with wit, depth, and keen observation. I found it remarkable!

darkly funny submitted by hbcarter on June 18, 2024, 5:15pm This book induces whiplash, in a good way. You're simultaneously horrified by a story of abuse and laughing at Irby's description of it. She demonstrates broken thought patterns such that you know you can't trust her judgment, but she does it with such incisiveness that you suspect she's more clear eyed than the rest of us. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Funny & witty! submitted by lakeabigail on July 7, 2024, 9:54pm Something I love about reading this book is that it's like listening to a friend talk or watching a riveting short series on Tik Tok.

Worth it! submitted by dayle on July 18, 2024, 12:22pm Although I started off not super interested, I became more and more invested. By the end, I was laughing out loud and crying, sometimes at the same time. The writing is a unique style; very honest, and sometimes pretty negative. However, the observations about life as a young adult are very strong.

Sassy submitted by Xris on July 23, 2024, 7:25am The sassiness is great, especially Siri's directions to the remote cabin in the woods! And I feel her pain about the awfulness of the world. I listened to a lot of music that she referenced, and might have found a new shoe line to buy from. I look forward to listening to her speak when she comes to the library!

Funny and insightful submitted by magg2185 on July 28, 2024, 9:02am I was crying-laughing at some of these essays (read "A Christmas Carol"). Sam is hilarious but also perceptive. She writes with wit and humor but also knows how to tune into real emotions and leave your heart in pieces. Loved this so much.
