Insightful Essays Spanning the Obama Years submitted by sdunav on July 6, 2018, 9:38am This was much better than the blurbs made me think it would be - it's a series of eight lengthy essays written over the Obama years, with introductions from after November 2016. Coates' main argument is that Trump's presidency is a result of racist backlash, but the essays are much more than that - they include some perceptive looks at history (including fascinating stuff about redlining in Chicago and Reconstruction), current events, and Black culture. I thought this was going to be totally depressing and it wasn't, it was just realistic.
