Lady Ingram, wife of Charlotte's dear friend and benefactor, wants Sherlock Holmes to find her first love, who failed to show up at their annual rendezvous. Matters of loyalty and discretion aside, the case becomes even more personal for Charlotte as the missing man is none other than Myron Finch, her illegitimate half brother.

Escapist Historical Mystery submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 11:14pm This follow-up to A Study in Scarlet Women picks up more or less where the previous book left off, finding Charlotte Holmes in possession of a career as a private detective and a group of allies who offer personal and professional support. Its Victorian setting is nicely rendered for a modern audience, if not without its share of minor anachronisms, and the writing style mimics that of contemporaneous literature, lending an air of credibility and keeping the atmosphere intact even as Thomas explores more modern themes. The central mystery offers huge personal stakes for Charlotte and most of the supporting cast, though I found some of its nuances to be a bit too subtle, even after the customary narrative explanations. Nonetheless, this book builds off of the strength of the series opener and promises even more thrills to come as it builds to an inevitable confrontation between Charlotte and her newly acquired nemesis.
