From the bestselling author of Everything I Never Told You, the intertwined stories of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the mother and daughter who upend their lives. In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town--and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs. Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood - and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.--Provided by Publisher.

So Good! submitted by gmknitter on July 12, 2018, 9:12am This book is heartfelt, relatable, and at times uncomfortable. It showcases strong women with individual characteristics, family relationships, and discusses abortion. I really enjoyed Celeste Ng's ability to create such interesting and relatable family dynamics and appreciated that I was able to watch them develop. It brings new perspectives on what it means to be a mother.

Very good book! submitted by bookher on August 1, 2018, 2:58pm This was very good book and interesting through to the end. I loved all the strong successful female characters in this book who were all admirable even though they had very different beliefs and lead drastically different lives.

amazing submitted by leilawilder on August 18, 2018, 5:38pm this book was SO good. i liked it (i'm 12), my mom liked it, and my grandma liked it!!!

Excellent read submitted by kpkozloff on August 24, 2018, 10:37am This novel kept me engaged throughout with interesting characters and a thought-provoking thread on motherhood and what it means to be a mother.

Beautiful Prose submitted by dntanzer on August 31, 2018, 4:48pm This book is absolutely gorgeous. The writing flows so well and is absolutely beautiful. The plot is relatively slow moving as this is much more of a character study. That said, I was never bored. I cared a lot about what happened to each of the characters and was very curious about how the book would end. Highly recommended!

great story submitted by Pooh3238 on June 18, 2019, 9:40pm This book was well written, and holds your attention. Many strong characters.

Interesting story submitted by rebecca.perreault on June 19, 2019, 1:28am This story could have been about any two families in our own community; it was very relatable and thought provoking. The book size was hefty, but the story played out quickly, with many interesting twists. It thoroughly fleshed out these characters motives, fears, and ambitions, especially in the realm of motherhood. I highly recommend.

Interpersonal connections submitted by xenokazegami on June 23, 2019, 6:50pm This book is focused heavily on human interactions, and has no problems letting the reader figure things out, it’s written beautifully and how it handles characters and descriptions is simply magnificent.

Excellent book submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 24, 2019, 8:58pm 4.5/5 What an excellent book. I can’t wait for the book club discussion. Though the writing is quite simple and straightforward (and so the book was a quick and simple read), the relationships in the story and circles within circles are complex and delightful. There is a little bit of mystery and a lot of putting pieces together as layered characters encounter people and situations that challenge who they are, what they think, what they believe, and how they will behave. A somewhat surprising racial angle provides a welcome sharp contrast to the wealthy-White-suburb story that was otherwise still fascinating but a bit bland. Overall an excellent book, and I’ll be seeking out Ng’s first novel as well.

A huge jump from her first novel submitted by lostoria on July 15, 2019, 5:48pm I was apprehensive to pick up this novel since I didn't think Ng's first novel was as amazing as reviews hyped it up to be. However, I was quickly proven wrong -- this story is so detailed but never boring; so personal and thought-provoking and keeps you wanting more with every turn of the page. The characters and Shaker Heights itself are extremely well-written (for the most part) and made the book worth my while. Definitely recommend.

Fabulous! submitted by jaromatorio on July 22, 2019, 12:03pm The character development through the course of this novel was fantastic, and really draws the reader into the story! I felt a strong connection with a few of the characters in particular, and despite sometimes being frustrated by their decision-making, was really rooting for them!

Wow! submitted by selujules on July 29, 2019, 6:28pm What a powerful book! I keep recommending it to people so I have someone else to talk with about it. Once I got into the book (it took me a while to keep all the characters straight..) I GOT INTO THE BOOK and could not put it down. I ended up reading it in almost one sitting! Lives up the hype.

Engaging submitted by gxtan on August 1, 2019, 5:25pm Well written, with an engaging plot line that keeps you reading until the end (though it does use the "start of the book is the end" trope). The characters are realistically written and given different personalities, though I didn't particularly connect with any of them. Overall, I'd recommend the book, and it raises some interesting questions about family and relationships within them.

Excellent submitted by redwood on August 2, 2019, 9:22pm Arresting novel about suburbia and parent-child relationships

Real and engaging submitted by alisonhatch94 on July 22, 2020, 10:39am Such a good, relatable read. I absolutely love the way she describes each character, you really get a feel for each of their personalities and can relate to each one in some way. I loved the compare/contrast of the two moms and also of their children. Some really great messages and themes and written in such an engaging, captivating way that makes you read the whole book in one sitting.

Good book! submitted by mshivaprasad on July 22, 2020, 3:22pm I enjoyed reading the book and look forward to watching the show on Hulu.

Four stars submitted by allie0 on August 21, 2020, 9:40am This book was very good. The characters and their relationships are well written and developed.

More like Little Coincidences Everywhere submitted by SurfGrape on June 24, 2021, 3:42pm This book doesn't have a plot so much as an increasingly improbable series of coincidences piled atop one another. As if the author took some short stories she wrote in her MFA program and tried to string them together into a novel. One star.

Outstanding writing submitted by kkjammers on July 16, 2021, 5:55pm Exemplifies what I used to tell my language arts students: sometimes the more carefully you look, the more beautiful the work becomes. Excellent detailed descriptions of the characters, their pasts, and their motivations. I absolutely enjoyed this fine novel. (To Surf grape) Thinking more carefully and pondering the characters' actions might reveal more cohesiveness. Ng is an enormously talented writer.

UofM Grad! submitted by alynnayotte on July 20, 2021, 11:08am Love that the author has some roots in Ann Arbor via graduate school. I discovered this author through a spotlight at Literati a few years ago and I was hooked. This book is remarkably developed and I felt that the screen adaptation did the book justice. All around praise for this text.

Little fires everywhere submitted by angie. on July 21, 2021, 7:50pm Such a good book! I recommend it to people who like adventure.

A Must-Read submitted by rmbussa on August 2, 2021, 2:23pm WOW! I read this as a recommendation from Reese Witherspoon's Book Club and it did not disappoint! It was a very quick read and an incredible story. I would recommend for everyone.

Very engaging submitted by ilenekroll on August 3, 2021, 2:57pm This book can really make you think . Well written and there are so many layers to these characters, makes for a wonderful read.

The relationship between moms and kids and class submitted by lballard on July 19, 2022, 7:50pm Interesting story with a clash of different family dynamics. Normal differences between class, but also race and adoption are explored.

Captivating read submitted by Bethybeth07 on July 24, 2022, 10:00pm Loved this book. I decided to read it after watching the Hulu adaptation. The writing is very descriptive and the storyline is interesting. Much better than the mini series.

Amazing!! submitted by ctconley on August 4, 2022, 3:33pm Genuinely one of my favorite books this year. Took a minute to get into it, but it delivered on everything. Can't wait to watch the series!

Hooked Immediately! submitted by mgabbieb on June 9, 2023, 10:40am I'm not usually a fast reader, but I read this book so fast. Easy to read and hard to put down!! It touches on themes of motherhood and family. It really made me rethink my ideas on both.
