"Perfect for fans of NBC's "This Is Us," Robin Benway's beautiful interweaving story of three very different teenagers connected by blood explores the meaning of family in all its forms--how to find it, how to keep it, and how to love it. Being the middle child has its ups and downs. But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family, including-- Maya, her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. Having grown up the snarky brunette in a house full of chipper redheads, she's quick to search for traces of herself among these not-quite-strangers. And when her adopted family's long-buried problems begin to explode to the surface, Maya can't help but wonder where exactly it is that she belongs. And Joaquin, their stoic older bio brother, who has no interest in bonding over their shared biological mother. After seventeen years in the foster care system, he's learned that there are no heroes, and secrets and fears are best kept close to the vest, where they can't hurt anyone but him. Don't miss this moving novel that addresses such important topics as adoption, teen pregnancy, and foster care." --Amazon.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Great, iffy for kids submitted by kate uleman on June 17, 2018, 8:48pm Far From the Tree is a great book about three sibling reunited. It does deal with a teen pregnancy, which comes with lots of emotions. There is also a hard divorce that has heavy drinking and some smoking. It is a great book for mature 12-13 year olds, I am in 6th grade and I think that most of my classmates would be fine reading this book. It is also a great book to read aloud. It is beautifully written and heartwarming. One of my favorites!

The best book I have read this year! submitted by Lucy.m.t on June 17, 2018, 9:13pm I did not want to put this book down! I loved every second of it, the humor, the feelings, and basically everything. I cried a little while reading this book too. The character's problems felt so real and relatable that I automatically connected with them. I wish this book would be never ending. I had read a prestigious review of it and decided to give it a spin. Totally a good idea! I would recommend this book In a second and already have. Best for middle school and above aged kids.

Good book. But not for kids. submitted by binsur on August 21, 2018, 3:12pm The book is amazing and it shows the troubles of the three siblings but there is swearing in it. So I would not recommend it to children.

good book submitted by kerstinrh on June 26, 2019, 6:55pm Three biological teens who have each been raised in separate homes (and towns) discover that they are siblings. The story is about their individual lives and getting to know each other. 2017 National book award winner. I liked this one It was an easy read.

Great submitted by O'Eily on July 23, 2019, 9:04pm This book really got you to understand what the characters were feeling, and understand their perspective. True, I wouldn't exactly recommend it to kids

Finding ourselves and finding each other submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 16, 2022, 10:18pm I’m really unsure how this ended up on my reading list, but I’m glad that it did. What an excellent story of finding ourselves and finding each other. I love what this book says about the family we have, the family we choose, and the family who chooses us. Within all that, it also takes on a lot of current topics: teen pregnancy, racism, divorce, LGBTQ+ issues, alcoholism, adoption and foster care (from multiple angles), bullying, privilege, therapy, and more. I would not have expected all that, but was impressed with how naturally it all slid into place, how the book never felt preachy, and how no angle sounded like it was trying to be the only “right” answer. 4.5/5, and highly recommended.
