Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents' house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family. But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga's role. Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.

Please Read This Book submitted by DBJC on June 16, 2018, 9:38am This is on the top of the list of books that I've read this year. Julia, our narrator, is not your perfect Mexican daughter and doesn't want to be because it's not her. When her sister dies in a bus accident, she's left to fulfill the role as best as she can...which she doesn't. I learned quite a bit about Mexican culture and a little bit about what it's like to cross the border in this book, which I was very grateful for. Also, Julia is a hilarious narrator with a lot to say about everything. There wasn't mushy romance, there was just enough. Mind though, this book also has heavy themes like severe depression, and self-harm which could be triggering, so read with caution.
I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter submitted by mg1234 on August 8, 2023, 12:21am This is one of the best books I have read in a while. I felt like I flew through this book because I had experienced so much of what Julia, the narrator, was experiencing with her Mexican culture, her parents, cultural expectations, gender roles. This was the first time I felt seen in a book and didn't feel alone with my life experiences as a Mexican-American woman and someone who isn't the perfect Mexican daughter. It was difficult to read at times because of how much I connected with it and felt like I was reading about my own life. I recommend this book to everyone, especially Latinas, and those who need/want more insight into our experiences. I am thankful that this book exists and Erika Sanchez is currently my favorite author. I look forward to reading her memoir.
