Oil, tempera, pastel and crayon on cardboard. Edvard Munch (1863{u2013}1944) was born in Norway. His works exhibit psychological themes related to his own life. His parents and two of his siblings died in his youth and another sister experienced mental illness. His work drew from Impressionism{u2019}s brushstrokes and Symbolism{u2019}s philosophy. The universal themes, simplified lines, and expressive color of Munch{u2019}s work influenced German Expressionism. The Scream is part of a series of 22 paintings Munch called the Frieze of Life, which was inspired in part by a hallucination Munch experienced. Four versions were created. In 2012, The Scream sold for over $119 million dollars. This painting has been the target of several high-profile art thefts. In 1994, the version in the National Gallery was stolen. It was recovered several months later. In 2004, both The Scream and Madonna were stolen from the Munch Museum, and were both recovered two years later.

Neat submitted by jarroyo on July 28, 2013, 5:03pm I don't usually like this kind of art, but I think this one is pretty neat. The colors are interesting and I like the use of curves.

Never was a fan of this one submitted by jgetty on June 20, 2015, 8:09am You see this picture everywhere and people seem to love it - but to me it's just disturbing. I don't like the person's mouth, eyes or bent-up face. It looks tragic, horrific to me. Not a fan, though, most people seem to like it, not me.

Identifiable submitted by ferielp on August 9, 2017, 11:28am For me it represents the moment when you just want to let loose a scream borne of pent up frustration, grief, anger, confusion, or any other hard to process emotion. Perhaps that impression is universal, since this Munch painting has been meme-d quite a lot recently.

Ahhhh! submitted by EJZ on July 28, 2018, 7:52pm I love this print.

It reminds me of one time, when I was shaving at home, bopping along to a particularly doo- wop version of "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas." I was using my hairbrush as a microphone, lip-synching along to the record, and put a little after shave on my cheeks. I was shocked how bad it burned, and my howling "Aaahhhhhhh!" must have been heard all through the neighborhood.

I swear, the face in the mirror was the exact same as Munch's representation in this print!

Small world!

A bit scary submitted by cbrewster on August 9, 2018, 11:04pm Since I was young I have found this to be very creepy. It seems so dark.

The Scream submitted by SBNB on August 21, 2018, 10:32pm This is a very well-known work of art. I don't know what the story behind this painting is (except that in the description above it says that the series was inspired by a hallucination). Maybe someone jumped off the bridge into the river and the screamer is horrified?

The Scream submitted by avrogers1 on August 24, 2018, 3:10am This is a really well known print. The painting seems sad to me. its not one of my favorites.

The Scream submitted by lstorc on August 30, 2018, 9:39pm Classic Edvard Munch! We've all been here at some point in our lives. Although I must admit that I prefer the Muppet adaptation.

The Scream submitted by c_zhang on June 15, 2019, 11:01pm Very famous, but I still really like the style.

The Scream submitted by i'm a blobfish on June 17, 2019, 3:54pm I like how unrealistic it is but the artist still used realistic painting properties like how the sunset causes everything to be bathed in a soft orange light. Also, who doesn't love that face?

Abstract Art submitted by JY 2005 on June 20, 2019, 7:38pm I really like the color changes in the sunset and how it goes well together with the dark river.

beautiful art submitted by .-.-.-. on July 6, 2019, 7:31pm I love the beautiful sunset in this picture. It is very colorful. The bridge is very detailed and looks realistic with the person on it. 4/5 stars.

The Scream art print submitted by a2sue on July 21, 2019, 4:04am The art print of The Scream is actually one of my favorites. That's because I often get frustrated and want to scream myself!!

good submitted by rawan on August 2, 2019, 12:53pm It is really good with the colors and texture and this picture would have been 5/5 stars for me if the person that is screaming face is different. It's kind of freaky. 4/5

Famous but just okay submitted by dntanzer on August 23, 2020, 6:47pm This is a nice print for those who have some sort of connection to The Scream, but otherwise it's just okay to me.

Iconic submitted by yanxia cao on August 29, 2020, 4:20pm This is probably the most iconic art piece, ever. Love the texture :)

A classic submitted by blancharddana on June 29, 2022, 9:36am Meme-able, recognized everywhere, this is the classic we all know and love. I feel this way a lot of the time.

hmmm submitted by SaraP on July 28, 2022, 8:47pm I suppose this will do... in a pinch. :)

Classic but unnerving submitted by Kitty4777 on August 4, 2022, 12:43am So much symbolism in this. Definitely worth having in the world but not interested in checking it out for myself to hang up!

... submitted by ryan.lorenz on August 24, 2022, 3:07pm That face is so wrong!!!
