How to Love, or At Least, Appreciate, Jazz! submitted by KidBlue on April 13, 2022, 9:58am I am a huge fan of all kinds of American music, but I was always stymied by jazz. Because it’s such an intelligent form of music, I felt like an idiot. I am not an idiot. I watched this remarkable series and it sent me on a path of joyous discovery for this wonderful and beautiful genre of music. One does not have to be an intellectual to appreciate jazz, but in my case, a little knowledge helped.

last episode is terrible submitted by tisaallen on June 18, 2022, 2:59pm This long-form documentary in Ken Burns' trademark style spends a lot of time on the 20s and 30s and Louis Armstrong in particular. The involvement of Wynton Marsalis as artistic director skews things in favor of his biases and the last episode is largely devoted to trashing some of the more adventurous jazz of the 60s and 70s. Wynton's brother Bradford even goes on record calling Cecil Taylor's music "total self-indulgent bullshit." The narrative goes on to depict the Marsalis brothers and other traditionalists as saving jazz in the 80s. It would have been much better as a 9-part documentary called "Early Jazz According to Wynton Marsalis."
