Read by Bahni Turpin.
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor black neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.Soon afterward, Khalil's death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Starr's best friend at school suggests he may have had it coming. When it becomes clear the police have little interest in investigating the incident, protesters take to the streets and Starr's neighborhood becomes a war zone. What everyone wants to know is: What really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does--or does not--say could destroy her community. It could also endanger her life.

intense! submitted by camelsamba on June 25, 2018, 11:09pm The story is INTENSE. One of the things that was most fascinating to me was the overt code-switching that took place. The language was so different when Starr was in ‘the hood' versus when she was at school or in other settings. You get to see the struggles she goes through to fit in to the different environments she navigates every day. It is very thought-provoking, especially for someone like me who has lived a relatively sheltered and privileged life. It is well deserving of the awards it has won.

Bahni Turpin is AMAZING submitted by majean on July 22, 2018, 12:32pm This is one of the best audiobooks I have listened not only because the story is just incredible, but Bahni Turpin gives a stunning performance. I will listen to anything she narrates now. This was an emotional and immersive way to experience this story. A+

Good submitted by zmclaugh on June 27, 2019, 10:17pm A powerful and necessary book that also managed to have several plot lines happening at once. Though it's a book about police brutality, there's much more to it than that.

Great submitted by c_zhang on June 28, 2019, 2:07pm A powerful and relevant story. The narration is good too.

WOW! submitted by komal hanif on June 12, 2020, 6:47pm this is a very relevant story that can easily be applied to the modern world.

Thought-provoking submitted by psgriffi on June 28, 2020, 4:07pm In my journey to learn about racism, I hadn't found a fictional work that immerses me in the real life of a black community member. This book hit the spot! I found myself thinking about the characters and pondering what I would've done in their situation long after I laid the book down. It alerted me to several areas of my life where I've had white privilege too.

Powerful submitted by steeny17 on July 12, 2020, 4:50pm Not only is this book full of diverse perspectives and issues, but it is incredibly well-read in this audiobook edition. If you want your fiction to teach you more about the world and yourself, this is the book. Enduringly relevant beyond our present political moment.

Sadly relevant book submitted by mickplu on June 14, 2022, 9:14am This well written book covers racial profiling as Starr's childhood friend is murdered by a police officer when they are pulled over for a traffic stop. The aftermath of the shooting is sadly still relevant in today's world. This would be appropriate for teens on up to adults.

Not badd submitted by Ilovetoeat on June 26, 2022, 8:18am Hi

Interesting to see things from a different perspective submitted by JennJenn on August 23, 2022, 6:37pm I enjoyed this book especially to see how things would be as someone in the school where they were not of the predominant culture within the school. Hard to read, though because of the topic.
