Expanding Harry Potter submitted by Meginator on June 26, 2017, 8:04am I grew up with Harry Potter and it was inevitable that I would see this movie. While I don't think that it is entirely successful as a film, I do appreciate the way that Fantastic Beasts fits seamlessly into the Harry Potter universe, giving fans a glimpse into wizarding history and expanding on some background characters from the original series.

The acting is good and the CGI, which usually bothers me, is top-notch and convincing (and more or less necessary). I really rooted for the main characters, although I thought the plot dragged a bit in several parts and found the climactic reveal wholly unsurprising. The visual tone is quite different from the other Harry Potter movies and the film takes some cues from horror. This is not a typical Harry Potter story and is definitely meant for older viewers who are prepared for its darker tone.

But all isn't doom and gloom. The movie has a lot of humor and clever nods to the original stories, and longtime Harry Potter fans should be satisfied. This is a different, but not an alien, take on the subject. I enjoyed this movie even if it has its faults; it's nice to return to J. K. Rowling's wizarding universe and her imagination seems endless.

Fantastic Beasts submitted by SBNB on August 8, 2017, 6:53pm I was expecting better. The story wasn't very interesting. I'll still buy it eventually to add to my Harry Potter collection, but I doubt I'll watch it much.

sorry submitted by leenajong on August 9, 2017, 11:47am It was a bit of a let down for me. Maybe I had high expectation for this one.

Different Flavour submitted by ferielp on August 9, 2017, 12:05pm Not the same world as Harry Potter, being a different time period and in the US. Still wonderful to see the creatures from the books on screen.

Finding Beasts submitted by yenkong on August 9, 2017, 2:59pm I was a little disappointed with this movie.

Okay submitted by DL on August 9, 2017, 6:21pm It is not Harry Potter good. I was expecting it to be very much like Harry Potter and it is not. It is interesting seeing magic folks in America and the creatures he brings from over seas.

A Bit Confusing submitted by Suzanne Muenz on August 29, 2017, 4:31pm The first part of the movie that helps with some of the background went too fast. I had to replay it after watching the movie and it helped. I also did a bit of research and it helped to fill in some of the holes...

can't wait for the next ones submitted by Sabrina Carlson on July 19, 2018, 8:45pm As a huge HP fan, of course I knew i would love this movie and they're making 4 more!!! I'm excited for the next film in this promising new series.

this is coming from an experienced and hardcore fan who has watched it over 3 times in theatres and plans to do the same with the next 4 :)

fantastic beast submitted by yufamily on August 1, 2018, 9:27pm Average and not too interesting...

Enjoyable addition- some dark parts submitted by SBrandt on August 23, 2018, 1:01am Over all an enjoyable addition to the Harry Potter world. I'm looking forward to seeing how the films develop.
Of note for families with younger viewers - the first part starts of rather entertaining and silly, but does progress to some darker/creepier parts a bit suddenly. Overall darker tone than some of the other Harry Potter films.

Incredible submitted by lstorc on August 28, 2018, 10:37pm This was reminiscent of the Harry Potter films not only by association but by stunning cinematography, believable acting, and the ability to really transform an entertainment experience into something spellbinding

Yay! submitted by Xris on August 29, 2018, 11:34pm I love that they're going back to the Potterverse to make more movies! And the cast is great!!

Fantastic beasts ... submitted by avrogers1 on June 16, 2019, 7:50pm I have had the hardest time getting into this film. I have attpted to watch it twice and I think I almost made it 45 mins the second time. I am not quite sure why! I am a huge Harry Potter fan, so I figured this would be a must see, considering it takes place in the Harry Potter universe. However, this is just not the case...

Alright submitted by c_zhang on July 5, 2019, 12:34am It's different from the Harry Potter films. I wish they incorporated some details JK Rowling stated as canon. They definitely had the chance to do so in this movie (like how Dumbledore's canonically gay).

Great! submitted by jwpark on June 16, 2020, 7:41pm I thought that this movie was full of action and fun twists. I rate it a 9 out of 10

Don't miss it submitted by mshivaprasad on July 22, 2020, 3:24pm This is for anyone wanting their HP fix.

Great movie! submitted by elizatsou on June 15, 2022, 11:17pm We watched this movie as a family and we all really liked it, especially we just finished all the Harry Potter movies. It is definitely different from the Harry Potter movies and the style is different. But the imagination and creativity are wildly impressive. Highly recommend it.

1000 times better than the Harry Potter movies submitted by ruffnuttuffnut on December 24, 2022, 5:53pm Since this movie’s screenplay was written by J. K. Rowling herself, it has a better foundation to begin on than the Harry Potter movies, all of which were written by Steve Kloves. It also has a fairly skilled director as well as very skilled actors and a strong soundtrack. It’s a really good movie
