You will devour this series submitted by Annimatronic on August 15, 2010, 2:57pm Not one to generally take much interest in graphic novels, this came to my attention via the AV Club in an article about how AMC (Madmen, Breaking Bad) is turning this series into a live-action show. I was intrigued enough to check this series out.

I'm glad I did.

There are so many levels of enjoyment here. The storytelling, the art, the writing. And for those who think of the worst case scenario, as realistic a depiction of what life would be like if zombies took over the world as you'll find anywhere.

This series is not afraid to kill off its characters, and many of the characters evolve (more like devolve) from book to book. There is quite a bit of action in these books, but also quite a bit of character development.

One interesting aspect is the limited knowledge the surviving characters have as to their situation. The lead character wakes from a coma to a near-empty world. Most of the characters have the limited information they were given before communications ceased. Many think that if they were to make it to the cities like the government told them to, they would be rescued. However, the cities were the hardest hit and now completely unsafe.

This brings up another point, when it comes to our own survival, how much should we rely on our government and others? There comes a point when we need to start being responsible for our own lives. Just how soft have we become in our day-to-day lives? What will it take for us to really start living?

"The Walking Dead" provides a lot of food for thought, and if you read it before bed, a fuel for some bad nightmares.

Walking Dead submitted by jaegerla on May 31, 2011, 1:18pm A great start to the series. I love how an understanding of the new zombie world is revealed to you as slowly as it is to Rick. You don't know how bad the epidemic is, how intelligent the zombies are, what made them undead, or if there is any place worth running to. A suspenseful and fast moving read.

Get Ready to Be Addicted submitted by allseltz on July 2, 2013, 10:35pm I was introduced to "The Walking Dead" series when my sister brought home the first season of the TV adaption. I loved it so much I thought I should begin reading the graphic novels. I'm really glad I did. This is an excellent series that keeps you on your toes. You never know who's going to survive or not. Yet, I love this series because it also explores human nature and the psychological aspects of what societal breakdown does to people. Warning: once you start reading this series, you will begin to prepare for the zombie apocalypse.

Say goodbye to your free time submitted by cococjm on August 11, 2014, 9:07pm I watched all four seasons and I can honestly say that the comics are way better. It helps dip into a lot more psychological issues. It also feels like a much different story with and without characters from the show. Though the basic plot line stays the same, survival. It's more than just guts and gore it's about the struggle to survive in a world turned upside down by a catastrophic event.

It really shows how much they hold out for hope, while still understanding the severity of the situation. The communication between carl and Sophia is so simple, yet so complicated in matters that are difficult for seven year olds to understand. I enjoyed the way they they incorporated each persons personal stories. I would have liked to know more about Andrea and Amy, but maybe more will be said in a future comic.

It's an extremely addicting book. I read it in an hour, that's how amazing it was. I'm going crazy waiting until tomorrow to get volume two. It's a comic that will devour your time. I personally recommend it to anyone who likes thrill and suspense. It's truly an awesome start to the series.

Horror submitted by liyuxing on August 23, 2014, 11:32am puts a spin on how you look at the real world and how horrible people can be to each other in times of a crisis

Amazing submitted by ECReader on June 20, 2016, 1:54pm I love this series and I think this is great start to the many books to follow. I highly recommend this graphic novel.

The walking dead submitted by leenajong on August 22, 2016, 11:03am Excellent excellent novel.

Excellent submitted by keldan315 on August 28, 2017, 11:28am This series is one of the most "mature" graphic novels I've encountered, not so much because of the horror element of having zombies everywhere (which is pretty scary in and of itself) but more because of the intense questions of human nature that these characters endure to stay alive. There is a ton of subtlety in this series, and it's worth reading multiple times.

Much better than the TV series, in my opinion. The books offer much better story telling.

my favorite submitted by kevinhe on July 15, 2019, 4:15pm I like this serial so much.

Really good submitted by lindsayrupert on August 12, 2019, 9:18am Like it, but not as much as tv series!

Great submitted by Sa05k on June 12, 2021, 9:31pm I thought it was a good opener to the series and set the scene and the tone for what is yet to come.
