"The Athabasca tar sands in Alberta are an oil reserve the size of England. Extracting crude oil that lies beneath the unspoiled wilderness requires a massive industrialized effort, effecting catastrophic damages on land, air, water, and climate. Peter Mettler shows us this extraordinary view from above, filming primarily from a helicopter to capture this breathtaking, unparalleled view of the world's largest industrial, capital and energy project...Mettler explores the clash between industry and earth, and beholds the barren wasteland that is left behind." -- Container.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Eyes Do Not Deceive submitted by whoisdonald on August 25, 2013, 10:51am Through stunning aerial video footage, Petropolis shows us the destructive side and environmental cost of extracting crude oil from the Alberta Tar Sands in Canada. With just a single sentence spoken in the entire film, the filmmaker Peter Mettler makes a powerful statement primarily through his images. It's gorgeous. It's horrifying. And to most viewers it serves as an indictment of a culture that turns a blind eye on the true costs of letting big corporations place their profits ahead of protecting the interests of the planet's inhabitants.
