It Is What submitted by jaegerla on June 13, 2011, 12:20pm Full of precious gems such as: "Though I knew she didn't exist, the monster I was most afraid of was The Gorgon. I hated the thought of her, but she was often on my mind. I made plans for how to defend myself from her, I'd scare myself with the thought of seeing her behind me in the mirror - of accidentally looking at her face. She paralyzes you. You have to cut off her head without looking at her face. Sometimes I managed- and other times she got me. I'd practice being paralyzed and turning into stone."
Generous, Easy, and Difficult submitted by howarde on June 14, 2024, 10:23am This book is not very long, but it helps to read it in multiple passes. The more theoretical pages are densely collaged and interspersed with easier to read passages about Barry's childhood and creative life, both of which have a lot of sadness and struggle. The last third of the book is a series of guides for people who want to want to write. It doesn't offer specific guidance on craft, or even steer you toward fiction or nonfiction, but instead is aimed at getting you to write living images. I had never read any of Barry's books before this one, but am now a fan of her work.
