This film is so much better than I thought it was going to be based on the description; despite the premise, the only truly campy thing about it is the incredibly 80s synths that constitute the vampire’s musical theme. Chris Sarandon makes for a truly menacing, yet debonair, vampire and Roddy McDowell steals the show as a (not-so) washed-up actor who comes to the rescue; in fact, McDowell’s character is the most interesting of the bunch, with a moving character arc that offsets the main character’s single-minded assuredness. The action scenes are intense and the script builds palpable suspense throughout, wasting no time on setting its characters on their course. The film relies on pretty standard vampire rules and does little to reinvent the genre, but so many creators are reinventing vampires these days that it actually feels somewhat refreshing to go back to the basics. Overall, this is a solid vampire flick that holds up really well.
