"Hark! A Vagrant" takes readers on a romp through history and literature--with dignity for few and cookies for all--with comic strips about famous authors, their characters, and political and historical figures, all drawn in Kate Beaton's pared-down, excitable style. This collection features favorite stories as well as new, previously unpublished content. Whether she's writing about Nikola Tesla, Napoleon, or Nancy Drew, Beaton brings a refined sense of the absurd to every situation.

F'ing Funny
submitted by sdunav on July 2, 2012, 5:46pm
Sarcastic and clever comics about famous authors, historical figures (especially Canadians), and books covers (Edward Gorey's and Nancy Drew ones). Funny stuff. My 15 y.o. stole it and loved it, though I probably wouldn't have offered it to him because there is a lot "f--- this" in it, but honestly he's probably heard that at the high school more times than I can count.
Plus he's reading Hamlet and MacBeth and there are some truly awesome takes on them
Beaton's a hoot

Not really sure why I checked this out from the library because I'd already read all of the comics on Beaton's website. But she never fails to make me chuckle and there's something exciting about a comic BOOK!
I wish she'd included the comics she writes about her family. They're some of her best work.
Probably great if you get all the references. submitted by eknapp on February 23, 2014, 8:32pm Comic strips about history and literature. As a reasonably well educated guy with an interest in history, I thought this well-reviewed collection would be an easy home run. But for every strip about the third Austen sister or Susan B Anthony or Burke & Hare--which I got and enjoyed--there are five that went right over my head: Canadian history, Anne of Green Gables, a flying pig-pony, Macbeth. I don't do Shakespeare. Disappointing.
great yet subtle wit submitted by hathaway1066 on July 15, 2014, 12:55pm Beaton's feel for modern pop idioms and knack for mash up combos of such with historical references is great stuff--at least 4 hearty, from the gut, guffaws, and a general happy buzz through out my reading of it. Leave it lying around and people will be impressed to just the right degree.
Funny and smart submitted by asopijw65 on July 23, 2014, 9:55am These webcomics are funny and smart! I love that there's history and the writer's commentary on events. Great read, highly recommend!
Humor for History Nerds submitted by Sara W on August 21, 2014, 8:39am These comics are hilarious, but far better if you already have passing familiarity with some of the figures Kate Beaton focuses on. I had no idea how much I would enjoy some good Jane Eyre jokes. I loved her style as well - her comics look hastily drawn, and the imperfection makes me feel like she was just super excited to tell people her jokes. Fun, smart, and really funny.
Harken To This submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on August 28, 2014, 8:18pm Collected from Kate Beaton's amazing webcomic. These are clever, funny comics about history, literature, politics, and a little bit of life in general. Jokes, satire, homage, and education all wrapped in a pretty cool style.
Awesomely Funny submitted by Avliss on June 18, 2016, 7:26pm Not only did this book expand my knowledge, but it was incredibly funny. The simple drawings were also easy on my eyes, and let me focus more on the words/meaning of the comics. My favourites were the ones dealing with literature (especially the "judge a book by its cover") - so amusing! On the whole, two thumbs up, and I will definitely be checking out more of Kate Beaton!
Amazingly Awesome Book! submitted by Ray N on June 17, 2017, 8:24pm Hark! A Vagrant is a absolutely hilarious book. Even though I didn't understand more than one or two of the references, it was still incredibly funny. Hark! A Vagrant is a terrific book, and I highly recommend it!
