Great start to a series! submitted by wampishing on June 24, 2013, 2:52pm When Zita activates a strange device she finds in a crater, mysterious dark arms come out of a portal and steal away her friend Joseph. Screwing up her courage, Zita plunges into the portal after him, finding herself on an alien world three days before an asteroid is set to destroy it. Worse, the device that brought her to the planet breaks in the process. Relying on her wits and the friendships she makes along the way, Zita has to save Joseph, herself, and maybe, just maybe the whole planet! While the looming danger of planet-wide destruction might seem unsuitably scary subject matter for a graphic novel directed at this age-group, the thin linework and unsaturated colors create a a soft atmosphere that offsets the possibly upsetting subject matter. Even with such subtle color choices, the characters remain vibrant and funny. The twist put on the villains - they're simply foolish, not evil - also keeps the story lighthearted. The ending, which solidifies Zita as a hero, promises further adventures for readers to enjoy. Recommended.

zita the space girl submitted by avrogers1 on July 28, 2017, 11:00pm I LOVED this graphic novel. It was such a cute story. It was illustrated well and had a lot of fun elements to it. The idea of door paste was so imaginative and kinda funny. I was so excited to continue the story in the next novel. It's a great read and I think kids would just love it. I read it in about 20 minutes, I just couldn't put it down.

Ben is the best submitted by jmb.mlis on August 11, 2019, 9:50pm Zita is a fun protagonist and enjoyable for all ages and all genders. I love Ben Hatke's art, so you can't go wrong with this series. It makes for a great read aloud together with a child, as well.

Ben Hatke "gets" kids submitted by FordAlpha on August 12, 2019, 9:58pm I'm not sure exactly why, but my kids have latched onto Ben Hatke's work more than I have. I like it well enough; they love it. We've checked out all of the "Zita the Spacegirl" books multiple times. Currently, my 7-year-old daughter is re-reading them for the umpteenth time. The story is imaginative and never too scary, and the cast of characters is large but not confusing.
