Read by Joe Barrett.
In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys--best friends--are playing in a Little League baseball game in New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills his best friend's mother. Owen Meany believes he didn't hit the ball by accident. He believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after 1953 is extraordinary and terrifying. He is Irving's most heartbreaking hero.
COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Wonderful story, superb narration submitted by CarolSeidl on January 29, 2020, 2:13pm This is the first book by John Irving that I've "read". I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and now consider Irving to be one of the best storytellers that I've come across. The narrator, Joe Barrett, is equally deserving of praise. His ability to create unique and well-suited voices for dozens of characters is unsurpassed. When looking for an audiobook, I will definitely seek Barrett out again.
This book deserves all of the awards that it has garnered over the years! submitted by mickplu on June 14, 2022, 9:17am John Irving makes you care about his characters whether you want to or not! This is an endearing coming of age novel that makes you think. The audio version is excellent in that the different voices and intonations definitely add to the story.
