This book is silly and I can't wait to turn to the next page to see what happens next.

Nice Mix of Styles; Heavy on Aesop submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:33pm This collection is a bit uneven, ranging from perfectly fine to outstanding, but it is utterly fascinating to see the contributors’ varied approaches to the relatively similar source material. Though many of the artists opt for fairly literal retellings, the best comics are those that have a little fun with the originals, often by adding additional characterization to the main players and/or a generous sense of humor. This can be simple, such as Jaime Hernandez’s depiction of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” as a mischievous troublemaker, or a bit more complex, like Maris Wicks’s version of “The Dolphins, the Whales, and the Sprat,” which manages to be educational in more ways than one while still trading heavily in irony and sarcasm. Though Chris Duffy’s editorial note mentions his intention to focus on Aesop, who is unquestionably important in the realm of Western fables, I would have liked to see a more conscientious effort to include tales from other cultural traditions beyond what is included here. Nonetheless, this anthology offers a nice group of fables presented in a new and imaginative format and provides an excellent opportunity to discover new-to-you artists along the way.
