A New Take on Old Traditions submitted by Meginator on June 30, 2019, 1:37pm This graphic memoir traces Lucy Knisley’s winding path to marriage, from her first date with her future husband to their honeymoon. Every chapter has a particular theme, and each opens with a photographed collage and concludes with a more simple photograph; these photographs ground the book in its reality-based roots and provide extra thematic depth that makes Knisley and those in her orbit even more relatable. Knisley’s striking emotional honesty and natural charm consistently tie the book together, and she approaches marriage and its associated traditions with a healthy dose of modern cynicism that leads her to question the institution itself and her relationship to it. This approach is most evident in the two-page spreads following each chapter; these take a humorous approach to wedding-adjacent topics as varied as historical and international traditions, the glories of the roadside poutine stands that pepper the Québéc, and a series of increasingly unlikely (yet side-splittingly hilarious) misfortunes with the potential to ruin the ceremony.

Knisley’s narration tends toward the wordy side, but her characters are wonderfully expressive and her page layouts are nicely and appropriately varied. In the end, despite a number of potential pitfalls, everything comes together nicely in the end, and the book's emotional climax comes in a lovely moment of quiet appreciation. Altogether, this book offers a delightful and refreshingly honest view of modern marriage, seen through Lucy Knisley's unique perspective but rendered with universal appeal that will delight most readers, married or not.

Delightful Memoir submitted by sdunav on August 13, 2020, 2:29pm A delightful memoir as well as an insightful look at wedding planning and the wedding industry. Reading this in late 2020, though...everything was different in those halcyon pre-pandemic days, wasn't it?
