Powerful... outstanding submitted by sueij on July 15, 2017, 9:26am I said this about _March: Book 1_: Graphic novels can be a fantastic tool to tell a story. When done well, the author and illustrator working together can convey story, drama, tension, character, and a genuine sense of presence to the world being conveyed. What is most awesome (and I don't use that word lightly) about _March_ is that it is the true recounting of John Lewis's journey from childhood to Civil Rights leader to member of the US House of Representatives present at the inauguration of our first Black president. The team that brings us this book capture all those elements. Graphic novels are often about superheroes. This story is about a real one.

I said this about _March: Book 2_: _March (Books 1 and 2)_ are a great entry into the Civil Rights story for anyone who doesn't know much about it (and even has some great tidbits for those who do). The format is wonderfully accessible for young people, and I highly recommend buying a set to read, and then donating it to your local library or school if you don't want to keep it for yourself. Lewis tells a wonderfully personal version of this critical time in our history, and the artist helps it to come to life before our eyes. Highly recommended. Certainly good for middle school and up.

Book 3 holds up to every powerful element of the first two books, and brings us to the confrontation on the Edmund Pettis Bridge in a way that is honest and continues to draw us in. He is up front about challenges of differing perspectives between SNCC and the SCLC, without casting blame or disparaging the good work that got done. He tells HIS story, lets us into HIS passion and perspective... and we are so much the better for it.

This stands up with Maus, Persepolis, and others for history in graphic novel form. Outstanding.
