"Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late 1960s Chicago, and narrated by 10-year-old Karen Reyes, Monsters is told through a fictional graphic diary employing the iconography of B-movie horror imagery and pulp monster magazines. As the precocious Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her beautiful and enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, we watch the interconnected and fascinating stories of those around her unfold"--Front cover flap.

Read This. submitted by monet tiedemann on September 13, 2017, 8:38am This was amazing. I cannot wait for Book Two. I wanted to spend so much time lost in the illustration, but also wanted to read quickly for the story.

Awesome Graphic Novel submitted by eschrine on July 25, 2020, 11:00am I'm normally not a fan of graphic novels, but I really enjoyed this one. Both Karen (main character) and Anka's stories were fascinating, though I admired how the illustrations and dialogue shifted depending on whose story was being told. There are a lot of elements revolving class, race, and religion, which are interesting to see from Karen's perspective as a child. Anka's story about her life in Nazi Germany is captivating and heartbreaking. I couldn't stop reading, and truly felt for the characters within this graphic novel.

Amazing on all accounts. submitted by molubird on July 26, 2020, 8:47am I've read a fair number of graphic novels, as they're one of my favorite mediums, and this has quickly become one of my favorites. The art style and coloring is dynamic and fluid, shifting through characters and experiences. And it's especially fun for all the B-movie horror covers. If you have any interest in monsters and monstrousness, especially as it relates to themes of race, class, sexuality and gender minorities...check this out.

A Tour de Force! submitted by gbrandol on July 22, 2023, 7:31am Amazing art and story, completely lovable protagonist who finds a unique way to express the difference she feels as a queer kid in the 1970s. A surprising and gut wrenching tale about WWII as well. This is a classic.
