Iraqi Sci-Fi submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 8:57pm This book makes for interesting reading, not least because it offers an alternative perspective to U.S. intervention in Iraq that comes from someone who actually lived there. I couldn’t quite make sense of the framing device (it added little context to the overall narrative for me), but I did appreciate the book’s structure, which tells a range of stories from overlapping perspectives; this makes the novel particularly compelling for non-Iraqi readers, as the viewpoint characters come from several different backgrounds. The story itself is of the winding, indirect variety, which makes a lot of sense given the broader historical context, and the science fiction elements make for striking metaphors. I don’t think I would have read this if a book group hadn’t selected it, as I’m not generally a fan of less concrete fiction (I wouldn’t call this surrealist, precisely, but some aspects of it are pretty close), but I found it to be a very rewarding step outside of my usual comfort zone.
