Performance of a lifetime

for Mr. Oldman....his portrayal is full of angst, humor, and determination. A history lesson with
references to Dunkirk, Chamberlain, and the FOG
Good Movie submitted by sara on June 18, 2018, 10:07am I love Churchill, but couldn't stop comparing the time in the movie to the current political climate in the US. In the beginning, the British saw Churchill as a buffoon- as many see Trump now. In retrospect, he is lauded. But, Churchill was an amazing writer and politician. If I had seen this movie before Trump was elected, I would have enjoyed it more.
Brilliant Performance, Little Narrative Drive submitted by Meginator on July 6, 2018, 11:05pm Following the tense first month or so of Churchill's ministry, the film offers an interpretation of some of the backroom politicking and heated debates that occurred as Germany plowed across Western Europe in early 1940. Gary Oldman excels in the main role, absolutely unrecognizable behind layers of makeup and prosthetics.Yet for all of its emotional weight and excellent performances, the film feels somewhat plodding, focusing to Churchill so exclusively that it's difficult to fully appreciate the situations he's reacting to or the characters he finds himself in opposition to. The film is well-made, earnest, and convincing, but may ultimately be a forgettable experience.
Entertaining submitted by moola on July 20, 2018, 7:05pm Great performance, thoughtit was really him!
Great acting, thin plot submitted by ferielp on August 28, 2018, 3:28pm By the end of the movie, you can't really spot Gary except in the eyes. He really inhabits the prosthetics and fills it out with the appropriate mannerisms and movements to make the result feel wholly authentic. Since the movie only deals with a short span of time and takes place mostly in parliament and in the war room, it doesn't have the brisk pace we're used to now. The focus is instead on setting up the circumstances for each one of the speeches of the movie.
Very Good movie, FAR better than others like DUNKIRK and others recently released. submitted by Tassos on March 4, 2019, 10:21am The movie details the IMPORTANT historical events, including behind the scenes, that let to Churchill's Saving the Free World, ALONE ( the US was neutral and the sickening Soviets were ALLIES to the Germans at that time). I find the other reviews here PETTY and NOT appreciative of the HISTORY being TAUGHT here. Pity.
a bit boring but good acting submitted by kbahleda on June 20, 2019, 10:01am A good movie overall and historically accurate, but a bit long and boring.
Good show of history submitted by Xris on August 5, 2019, 10:45pm Would like to see more like this. After seeing the movie Dunkirk, it's interesting seeing the other part of the decision making that went on during that time. The make-up on Gary Oldman was incredible!
