Hello submitted by smr on July 3, 2020, 10:14am Night
One of those beautiful, quiet picture books submitted by FordAlpha on August 22, 2020, 9:42pm This book portrays the story of a lighthouse keeper's tenure across several years, before the lighthouse becomes automated and no longer needs a keeper. Lovely illustrations depict his usually quiet routine, punctuated by occasional bursts of urgent action. The keeper's wife arrives, and they later welcome a child. It's all very serene and contemplative and beautiful, and unfortunately, that kind of picture book just doesn't hold my kids' attention.
A lovely book with many jumping off points for further learning submitted by ERGeeting on June 12, 2021, 2:10pm I read this book to my children as part of our homeschool. We did a unit study with the book and learned about the history of lighthouses, their locations, and how modern lighthouses have changed. We even ate a traditional "pork & beans" dinner. It's a lovely book with interesting illustrations. My children asked a lot of questions the more we read the book which was perfect!
The Magic of Lighthouse Living submitted by sarah fishburn on June 24, 2021, 11:44am I'll start by saying I AM one of Sophie Blackall's greatest fans! I've been reading this to some of my grandkids over FaceTime this past year or so. They have so many questions for the author/illustrator, for example once the lighthouse keeper and his family moved, do computers control the lights?; I only wish we could have a Zoom meeting with her to discuss some of the many topics they raised. As to the specifics of the book itself, the relatively tall thin format is just right for the subject. There's a foldout page! Each illustration is filled with the sorts of details children love to ponder. The kids of all ages also really appreciated the drama of a shipwreck, a serious illness, a birth, not being glossed over, but particularly as they are each resolved securely. Cannot recommend this book more highly.
Beautiful Book submitted by monikioo on June 9, 2023, 8:22pm This was a beautiful book, almost melancholy. We probably loved it more than my kids.
Love this book submitted by sarajowaycee on July 18, 2023, 12:08pm I really enjoy Sophie Blackall’s illustration style. It feels just right for a lighthouse and the illustrations reminds me of Newfoundland! It’s a book that takes me on a wonderful journey
