Paris, at the dawn of the modern age: Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride--or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia--the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion! Sebastian's secret weapon (and best friend) is the brilliant dressmaker Frances--one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone's secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect a friend?

A lovely quick read.
submitted by Kitty4777 on June 30, 2018, 3:33pm
I finished this book in one sitting. It was too engaging to put down. It was a sweet story with some antics. I loved how they used different pieces of a dress pattern between chapters.
The story overall felt like it could be realistic, but is still outside of time in order to tell a great story. It does make you wonder about Parisian dressmaking history, though! I teared up at some especially touching moments.
After reading this book, I want to put on a dress and take it out on the town for myself! Be yourself!
Beautiful submitted by skiger on July 31, 2018, 11:48am This book was beautifully done - both the story and the illustrations. The dresses were all amazing! It was also wonderful for showing the fear of being accepted for who you truly are and how this fear no only wears one down, but also those around you.
Read this book! submitted by jdev13 on June 15, 2019, 6:12am I loved The Prince and the Dressmaker! Lovely art, beautiful story of identity and discovery and love. This is a really great and engaging story to give to friends asking questions about gender or being normal! Love love loved it!

Sweet, Engaging Read submitted by purplekitty on July 24, 2019, 8:54pm This book may not be long, but its story of identity and acceptance is engaging and gorgeous. A must-read!
So wholesome and sweet submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 19, 2020, 9:14pm This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who could use an uplifting story. The illustrations are lovely, and the story itself is so positive. I love the relationships between the characters and the theme of accepting people for who they are.
Great Fairy Tale for Modern Times submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 8:47am This book is completely and utterly amazing, and as soon as I finished it I wanted to pick it up and start all over again; it is easily one of the best books I’ve read this year. Jen Wang’s visual style is as charming as her characters and the story feels like a fairy tale, albeit one deftly crafted to resonate with modern audiences. It’s lovely to have a queer narrative aimed at younger readers that treats the characters’ queerness as a simple fact, a given; though the book does deal with the difficulties inherent in coming out and/or being outed, neither of the main characters ever questions who Sebastian is at his core. That message is a crucial one for readers of all identities, and it’s part of what makes the book so effortlessly effective. The story is affirming, the characters are easy to root for, and the visuals are perfectly tuned to the book’s tone, making this graphic novel a complete package that will delight pretty much anyone who reads it.
short but lovely submitted by jennycai on July 10, 2022, 1:46pm beautiful art, I loved seeing what dresses she would come up for him, beautiful way of conveying the journey that goes into accepting your identity and maintaining your relationships

Great! submitted by Xris on June 15, 2023, 4:32am Great show of a non-binary or genderfluid person, along with beautiful illustrations. I love how the fashion show turned out in the end!
Wholesome and Radical, recommended for conservative lawmakers submitted by Emily Atherton on July 1, 2023, 8:45pm Everyone, drop what you're reading and read The Prince and the Dressmaker, by Jen Wang. Not only is my child (4) obsessed with it, but I absolutely am also obsessed with it. It is poignant and thoughtful and beautiful and wholesome and radical. Go read it, it will take you an hour maybe, then recommend it to lawmakers in conservative states who think that wearing a dress is dangerous, too. A graphic novel well worth the time, this from me, a novel-only kind of girl.
Another one of Jen Wang’s treasures submitted by Margaret on July 25, 2023, 3:50pm Jen Wang has always been an inspirational author for me. I seriously love her art style and her storytelling. This truly is a great story to read to your teenagers and to maybe kids a little younger it’s basically about finding out your identity and trying to find your way in the world. It should be put in pride month collection. I would’ve loved to of met her at the comic arts festival this year in Ann Arbor but sadly enough, she didn’t come. If she ever does, I want her to sign my copy of this book along with several of her other work. If you haven’t checked out this book or the other stories that this author day, please do they really worth your time.
sweet story about being true to yourself submitted by apknapp on August 20, 2023, 11:55am Lovely characters, pretty art, fun story. Very quick read, hardly any text.
A great queer graphic novel submitted by magg2185 on June 17, 2024, 7:18am A fun, heartwarming graphic novel with a fun, queer twist on the traditional fairy tale story.
An absolutely heart-touching and beautiful story, recommended for all!

A beautiful story about family, friendship, self-discovery, and confidence. "The Prince and the Dressmaker" is about two teenagers who are trying to find their place in the world, with only the support of each other.
Prince Sebastian learns how to slowly build his confidence through the gorgeous dresses that are designed by Frances. At the same time Frances builds her skills and confidence working as Sebastian's personal seamstress. They support each other and find love as they learn how to be true to themselves.
There are a few times when the modern vernacular and expressions broke the period immersion for me, and I never could figure out if Peter had ill-intentions or not, but those were only minor in comparison to the high quality of the story.
Not gonna lie, I teared up a couple times because there were such beautiful moments throughout the book. When Sebastian first dons a dress made especially for him and feels truly himself for the first time, when his parents embrace him after not seeing him for so long, when his father puts on a dress to support him and Frances in the fashion show, and when Frances gets to meet her idol and be complimented for her work.
