COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Great Tribute to a Great Talent submitted by Meginator on June 27, 2020, 5:42pm This album features artists setting Johnny Cash’s poetry and lyrics to their own music, and the result is a fitting tribute that both respects Cash’s legacy and celebrates his continuing influence in and beyond country music. Unsurprisingly, most of these tracks fit in various country and bluegrass genres, with one notable exception being the striking “Goin’, Goin’, Gone”, more appropriately described as R&B and all the more effective for its transformation of Cash’s distinctive style into an unexpected (if not wholly unrelated) form. Though the lyrics are Cash through and through, each artist brings their own style to the project, resulting in an anthology full of pleasant surprises and distinctly meaningful engagement with the source material that looks as much forward as it does back. This is an exceptional album and a fitting tribute to the Man in Black that celebrates his legacy and his lasting impact on contemporary musicians.
