"The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of a multibillion-dollar startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end in the face of pressure and threats from the CEO and her lawyers. In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood tests significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn't work. For years, Holmes had been misleading investors, FDA officials, and her own employees. When Carreyrou, working at The Wall Street Journal, got a tip from a former Theranos employee and started asking questions, both Carreyrou and the Journal were threatened with lawsuits. Undaunted, the newspaper ran the first of dozens of Theranos articles in late 2015. By early 2017, the company's value was zero and Holmes faced potential legal action from the government and her investors. Here is the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a disturbing cautionary tale set amid the bold promises and gold-rush frenzy of Silicon Valley"-- Provided by publisher.

Intriguing submitted by mbleed on June 27, 2018, 11:49am How they got away with it for so long is beyond me and a great warning for other situations where this cult mentality can occur. A good and quick read, and a story almost too crazy to be nonfiction.

What not to do in biotech submitted by KatyaS on July 11, 2019, 11:26pm An excellent book describing how far a CEO can got to satisfy her ego.

Captivating book for an inconspicuous story submitted by shoelaces on July 18, 2019, 10:08pm I remember seeing advertisements just a handful of years ago with that very image of a single finger, a single drop of blood, and promises of several different test results. John Carreyrou sheds a bright light on how Theranos came to be, and soon, how the company's reputation was no longer in the hands of its employees or even its actual capabilities, but fell solely on the shoulders of Elizabeth Holmes and her web of lies

Gripping Narrative, Big Fraud submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on July 25, 2019, 6:18am An enthralling and thoroughly researched report of personal ambition that was unraveled by deceit.

Fast read submitted by emileeione on August 29, 2020, 5:16pm Haunting! Not usually my type of book but I sped through it.

Strong ending submitted by A2AE on June 13, 2021, 10:33pm I liked the last 100 pages the best because it focused on the a consequences that the first 200 pages (at times repetitiously and not as engagingly) detailed. I did tire a little reading about wealthy people who didn’t listen to regular people warn them that the company was trouble.

Interesting submitted by krathje on June 26, 2021, 12:19pm I found the content interesting, but felt it could have been written in a more engaging fashion. This read like a timeline of events, a record of what happened. Still, important documentation of a farce that involved many well-known leaders.

Unbelievable, almost submitted by onpaper24 on August 5, 2021, 7:13am I loved this book and the way the story unfolded. I wish there was a second to tell me more about how holmes ended up.

Unbelievable, almost x 2 submitted by bjkoch on July 15, 2022, 6:04pm well written account of what happened with Holmes. dramatically written

Unreal Fraud submitted by danzoia on August 20, 2023, 7:37pm Very well written book on the Theranos fraud. Hard to believe this happened, very disgusting criminal behavior and probably only scratching the surface of what goes on in Silicon Valley start ups trying to make it big.
