In 1940, eighteen-year old Juliet Armstrong is reluctantly recruited into the world of espionage. Sent to an obscure department of MI5 tasked with monitoring the comings and goings of British Fascist sympathizers, she discovers the work to be by turns both tedious and terrifying. But after the war has ended, she presumes the events of those years have been relegated to the past forever. Ten years later, now a radio producer at the BBC, Juliet is unexpectedly confronted by figures from her past. A different war is being fought now, on a different battleground, but Juliet finds herself once more under threat. A bill of reckoning is due, and she finally begins to realize that there is no action without consequence.

Enjoyable submitted by samanthar on October 31, 2018, 7:31pm Atkinson's writing enfolds you into the world of 1940's London, as you follow Juliet, a young woman who works for the British government transcribing audio tapes. The story twists and turns with its rather large cast of characters. I was disappointed in the book only because I loved "Life After Life" and expected something similar. On its own, Transcription was an enjoyable historical fiction read.

Disappointing submitted by denisemw on January 22, 2019, 12:23pm I cannot recommend this book. Author uses one hundred words when fifty would suffice. Too many characters- along with aliases- made this both uninteresting and hard to follow. I dislike about one out of a hundred books; looks like the next ninety nine should be good.

not up to her other books submitted by 21621031390949 on August 10, 2019, 12:12pm I've really loved some of Atkinson's other books, especially "Life After Life" and others in that series, but I'm disappointed by this one. It dragged some in the second half, and then the ending came so quickly and surprisingly, leaving several loose ends. Not my favorite but she is still an excellent writer.
