It's early 2000 on New York City's Upper East Side, and the alienation of Moshfegh's unnamed young protagonist from others is nearly complete when she initiates her yearlong siesta, during which time she experiences limited personal interactions. Her parents have died; her relationships with her bulimic best friend Reva, an ex-boyfriend, and her drug-pushing psychiatrist are unwholesome. As her pill-popping intensifies, so does her isolation and determination to leave behind the world's travails. She is also beset by dangerous blackouts induced by a powerful medication.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation submitted by nmrhoads on June 11, 2022, 6:59pm annoying main character but still really good.

Sophisticated Young Woman + Heavy Pharmaceuticals = A Dull If Well-Written Book submitted by EEK on July 21, 2022, 6:29pm The main character/narrator seems devoid of empathy and basic human decency throughout the majority of the book, making it, at times, difficult to read from a plot-perspective although it could be argued that there isn't much of a plot to begin with. Much of the book centers on the protagonist's hazy thoughts and memories between drug-induced slumbers. There isn't much in the realm of character or story development so unless you really enjoy reading about high-flying, vapid members of society and their every waking thought, you're probably better off skipping this one.

Well written... but dull is right submitted by jacquero on August 9, 2022, 11:16am Not worth reading in my opinion.

Awesome Book submitted by APluss on June 29, 2023, 6:57am I haven't read everything Moshfegh has written, but of the four or five of her books I have read, this is definitely the bast. It's a fascinating look at life in pre-9/11 America. We sleepwalk through our days, unaware of the consequences of our actions. I recommend all of her works, but this is amazing.

Very good book, hard to recommend. submitted by foilista on July 11, 2024, 12:52pm I'm convinced that Ottessa Moshfegh is a genius, and she has an incredible capacity for writing novels without a single likable or even sympathetic characteris. My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a biting critique of contemporary inequality and ennui, but it's also very hard to get through. At times boring and infuriating. A mixed bag!
