At the Disco has been nothing if not unpredictable during their career, so I suppose this album of straightforward, friendly pop songs should feel less unexpected than it does; nonetheless, it is a bit of a disappointment from a name that has historically pushed boundaries. “Pray for the Wicked” does make good use of some of Panic!’s trademark theatricality and Brandon Urie’s expressive voice, but offers little in the way of surprise or lasting impact, with markedly straightforward lyrics to match. From another group, this album might feel different but Panic! At the Disco may be hampered here by previous success and an erstwhile playful spirit of chaotic inventiveness that just doesn’t come across as strongly on this album.
