More Understated submitted by Meginator on August 17, 2020, 7:24pm This album marks a bit of a departure from the huge vocals that dominate Ariana Grande’s previous radio-friendly singles, resulting in a far more intimate experience both musically and in the lyrics. The style showcases other aspects of Grande’s talent and her ability to convey a range of emotions beyond raw power, though she does occasionally let it rip when the music calls for it. Most of the tracks feel locked into a modern pop sensibility, taking some cues from the bubblegum pop of the late 1990s while feeling more mature and introspective than much of what top-40 radio, then or now. It’s nice to see Grande branching out a bit and delivering a rare dose of honesty, finding strength in her vulnerability.
