Quick-witted, ambitious Ji Lin is stuck as an apprentice dressmaker, moonlighting as a dancehall girl to help pay off her mother's Mahjong debts. But when one of her dance partners accidentally leaves behind a gruesome souvenir, Ji Lin may finally get the adventure she has been longing for. Eleven-year-old houseboy Ren is also on a mission, racing to fulfill his former master's dying wish: that Ren find the man's finger, lost years ago in an accident, and bury it with his body. Ren has 49 days to do so, or his master's soul will wander the earth forever. As the days tick relentlessly by, a series of unexplained deaths racks the district, along with whispers of men who turn into tigers. Ji Lin and Ren's increasingly dangerous paths crisscross through lush plantations, hospital storage rooms, and ghostly dreamscapes. Yangsze Choo's The Night Tiger pulls us into a world of servants and masters, age-old superstition and modern idealism, sibling rivalry and forbidden love. But anchoring this dazzling, propulsive novel is the intimate coming-of-age of a child and a young woman, each searching for their place in a society that would rather they stay invisible.

mystical submitted by kerstinrh on June 20, 2019, 6:30pm This is a hard book to summarize due to a lot of intersecting story lines. The story takes place in 1930s colonial Malaysia with Ji Lin, an apprentice dressmaker and Ren, an 11 year old house boy. The book has adventure involving tigers and mummified fingers, mystery with characters interacting with the dead and altering reality through their dreams, romance and just an overall interesting story.

Really good submitted by zmclaugh on June 27, 2019, 10:23pm Magical realism, historical fiction, and set in Malaysia. Everything I didn't know I needed but definitely needed.

Compelling read submitted by Cihendricks on June 27, 2019, 10:48pm This was a fascinating adventure. The plot and characters were compelling, and there were a few unexpected twists. It was definitely an enjoyable read.

The Night Tiger submitted by lemmer on July 2, 2020, 9:03pm I did not enjoy this book very much. I thought it was going to be more about an actual tiger prowling the village and it was not at all. I thought that many of the characters were unlikable and that the love story between the girl and her step brother was just silly!

Still thinking about it submitted by thesrays on June 15, 2021, 9:33pm What happened here? This was a book club book for me, and outside my usual genre, but I unexpectedly enjoyed it. There was a strong dose of myth and superstition combined with Malay culture and Chinese culture with a bit of a dreamworld afterlife thrown in for good measure. I'm still pondering various aspects of the story. Unexpectedly interesting for me.

Folklore + romance submitted by ferielp on July 23, 2021, 9:09am Beautiful imagery, immersive storytelling and a strong narrative voice. You worry for the characters when things go wrong, and rejoice with them when they overcome obstacles.
