When Tony Lip, a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on a book to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger, as well as unexpected humanity and humor, they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Excellent Movie submitted by Brigid on July 6, 2019, 1:21pm I enjoyed this movie and the interpretation of the situation of Blacks in the South, whites in the South and a view into how just getting to know someone can change everything and even the people around you. Brave souls, they were. It took courage to do what Dr. Shirley did. I"m glad they became friends and overcame their differences, racial, cultural, social. I'd watch it again. I wish there was a book. There has to be more to the story than these 8 weeks!

Endearing story submitted by saleder on July 16, 2019, 10:35am I liked the story told by this movie, although throughout I felt like Viggo Mortensen was acting. It was distracting. The cast is excellent, all fine actors, and a lot of attention was paid to getting the time period details right. I recommend watching it, but was a little disappointed.

Clashing of cultures, GREAT movie! submitted by LVDS on August 26, 2019, 10:26am True story....cultured educated negro meets white tough Italian from the Bronx. They each have a lot to learn from each other as a lifelong friendship grows. The 60's were not that long ago. Fantastic music too!!

Excellent, and true to the actual story! submitted by Tassos on December 14, 2019, 6:59am I thoroughly enjoyed watching this DVD, and as you can see in my other reviews, I can stand barely 1 in 10 POS "movies" Hollywood tries to shove down our throats these days.

It is also commendable that the actor, esp the black actor, really resembled the real person he was portraying, in most similar movies I saw recently, based on true people and events, the actors look NOTHING like the real person!

100% Recommended! I had to kiss 100 frogs to find this gem!
