Not one of his best... submitted by m steve on June 16, 2019, 1:11pm This is a fairly interesting read but it does not compare favorably with most everything else that he has written

The Pioneers: Settling Ohio and its River Valley submitted by ekjensen on August 6, 2020, 4:54pm Agree with the first brief review! This book is really narrower in scope than its title. Its about the settling of the town of Marietta, primarily, and neighboring settlements starting right after the American Revolution. The Cutlers, Putnams and Parkers are the featured families. In particular, Ephraim Cutler, is the featured family member, in detail, from his birth to his death. He was instrumental in keeping the state "slave free" and instituting a public education system including universities. This book would be well featured in Ohio history classes today.

I agree with the above reviewers. This was very narrow in scope and not very interesting. Hi sother work was much more interesting.
There was much more to pioneers than this small Ohio town. The anti-slavery part was interesting.
The Pioneers

Who knew anything about Ohio could be so interesting? David McCullough's 'The Pioneers' is a history of the settling of the land northwest of the Ohio river, what would become Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. It's possible that I've forgotten things, but I don't remember ever learning about this in history class, which is surprising given its importance. The charter for the new territory was granted just after the Revolution, and its founders insisted on two critical criteria: that slavery be outlawed and that public education would be a major purpose of government. The founders were mostly Ivy League graduates, and they modeled the first settlement, Marietta, OH, after East coast cities. (It makes me want to visit Marietta sometime, to see how much of the early settlement is still visible.)
McCullough does a good job of giving plenty of detail while also making the story clear and accessible. He mainly follows three or four people who had an outsize influence on the settlement, although he does offer side stories about other important events and people.
