Absolutely Stunning submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:02pm This documentary is comprised entirely of restored archival footage and audio from the Apollo 11 mission, along with what appear to be contemporary news broadcasts, carefully selected and edited to create a compelling, surprisingly intimate narrative history of NASA’s most famous triumph. The overall focus is definitely informational and unembellished as the film traces the mission from a few hours before liftoff to its Pacific touchdown, but the use of multiple perspectives gives it emotional power as viewers worry about the astronauts alongside Mission Control and become stunned by the lunar landscape’s magnificent desolation alongside Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The story itself is inherently powerful, and the filmmakers operate with restraint even as their editorial eye is evident in the selection and splicing of various visual and audio elements. The pictures are absolutely stunning, unbelievably clear and crisp for the era in which they were created (with some unexpected examples of artistic-minded cinematography to boot), and Todd Douglas Miller’s careful direction ensures that the story flows nicely between the video and audio; as far as I could tell, the only modern audio is the music, which is well-chosen and serves to build tension during climactic moments. Even today, the Apollo program is an impressive feat and a remarkable testament to humanity’s innate, insatiable curiosity and ingenuity, and this film offers a powerful first-hand look into its inner workings, from the launch pad in Florida to Houston’s ground control, to the Moon, and back.
