Includes an excerpt from the author's Mexican gothic (pages 343-362).
"The Mayan God of Death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this dark fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore. The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather's house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own. Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather's room. She opens it--and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea's demise, but success could make her dreams come true. In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City--and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld."-- Provided by publisher.

YA-style submitted by nemiller on July 17, 2021, 6:44pm I loved the plot, the pacing, the world-building, the characters, almost everything about this book. But the writing style just never clicked for me. Still, I liked the book enough to keep going until the end.

It's categorized as adult, but the protagonist straddles that line at 18 or 19, so it might be enjoyed more by the YA set.

Wanted More submitted by bjkoch on July 15, 2022, 6:01pm After reading Mexican Gothic (author's other book), i expected more from this book

Love this author’s fresh take submitted by jessikajessika on August 8, 2022, 9:10am I also came to this book after reading Mexican Gothic (which you should also read). I love the cultural connections Moreno-Garcia is able to weave seamlessly into her work in a way that feels both authentic and significant. This story is no exception to that. If you enjoy quick fiction that has some magical qualities, you’ll enjoy this.

Would read again submitted by redmansf on July 4, 2023, 9:25am The cultural context is beautiful and well laid out. This book is an exploration of the integrity of magic & its basis in humanity. An escape and a guidebook, I enjoyed it a lot! I agree with other reviewers that this could be popular as YA.
