Just Like You Except Better at Songwriting submitted by Meginator on August 20, 2021, 7:51pm This album has a dreamier musical quality to it than some of the duo’s more iconic albums, but it suits them well and gives the album the kind of thematic cohesion that characterizes all of their releases. Set against flowing synth-pop backdrops, the lyrics pop out against these background textures, both for their forthright content and for the singers’ unique vocal timbres, used here thoughtfully as a contrasting instrumental element as well as a lyrical delivery service. Given that the album features the sisters returning to some of their earliest songwriting, I expected a somewhat different experience that tapped into their roots, but this is a more refined, almost mainstream effort that feels miles away from the raw indie-pop of “So Jealous”. I personally still prefer the earlier albums, which had a more unique character to them, but this dreamy synth-pop still has a quintessentially Tegan and Sara feel to it that nicely represents their continuing evolution.
