Important History to learn submitted by flemingj on June 26, 2021, 9:10am You will learn a lot about the disablility rights movement from this book. It is written in a way the many younger folks can enjoy as well. Ms. Heumann is a true hero.
Amazing submitted by manz on December 15, 2021, 9:47am Judy was a pioneer in the disability rights movement, and it was great to read her story and hear of ALL of her accomplishments in an accessible, easy to read book. Her actions and tenacity are very inspiring. I listened to the audio book as read by Ali Stroker-- and it was very well done!
Well-Written, Engaging, and Thought-Provoking

Being Heumann was an excellent read. The book chronicles Judy's life as a young child facing accessibility issues and outright discrimination. From this early past, Judy's life and close ties to the disability rights movement are explored. It's written in such an engaging way that sometimes I felt as if I was reading fiction (usually, nonfiction is a touch more difficult for me to pay attention to).
As an autistic person, I deeply appreciated learning about the history behind some of the disability rights movement, and really respected Judy's insistence on accessibility for all disabled people.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book.
Wow, wow, wow submitted by bcartm01 on June 17, 2022, 11:13pm Thought this book, I just kept wondering to myself how I had never heard of or learned about Judith Heumann before. She is truly a hero in the disabled community, and our world community in general. She is an incredible person. I’m so glad that I read this book and also recommend watching her interview on the AADL website.
Fantastic account of the disability rights movement submitted by pk on July 5, 2022, 2:22pm Definitely worth your time to learn about Judy Heumann and all she did to further/start disability rights in our country! This is easy to read and conveys the excitement, tension, and heartbreak of fighting to get disability rights even on the radar of lawmakers. Definitely a page turner in parts. Check this out!
Why don't we all learn about folks like her through pop culture? submitted by lisa on July 9, 2022, 12:23pm What a rockin' person. Glad to see here, as I go to write a review, that there's an interview with her on the AADL site.
Interesting life/activist primer submitted by lballard on July 19, 2022, 7:41pm She has an amazing life story. She seemed to get the opportunities she needed to learn how to create change, so she could help create equal rights.
Important read submitted by majean on July 22, 2022, 4:03pm There is a lot of important info here that more people should be aware of.
Interesting to learn more of the history submitted by JennJenn on June 27, 2023, 11:31am Though I had lived through some of this history, I had not realized the isolation of children with disabilities in the short time before I was born.
Eye opener submitted by rshah on July 24, 2023, 3:19pm Judith Heumann’s memoir is an eye opener if you are unaware of the history of the disability rights movement. Being Heumann also shows what can be accomplished when groups across the civil rights movement band together and I hope it is a reminder to all of us that we can only move forward if we fight together.
