The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound, human, best friend Tom Wachowski. Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.

Strangely Not a Disaster! submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 5:07pm This film takes the characters from the original Sonic the Hedgehog games, Sonic himself and Dr. Robotnik/Eggman, and drops them into a relatively familiar plot combining buddy cop, road trip, and superhero tropes. As a gamer of a certain age, I appreciated the little nods to the original series that pop up occasionally and was particularly pleased by how they made the Final Boss Battle mimic one from the games; the end credits also offer a nice dose of nostalgia. I thought that Sonic and Dr. Robotnik were a bit overdone as characters, but I really enjoyed James Marsden’s performance, which sat comfortably in between appropriately goofy and genuinely emotional. Plus, I definitely did not expect this film to make an argument supporting police abolition, especially since it stars a small-town cop, but I think the scriptwriters inadvertently did it. Aside from the use of the familiar characters, nothing really sets this movie apart, but it’s perfectly fine and pre-teens will probably get a kick out of it.
