Into the silent sea -- The light that shifts -- Red smoke -- The gates of the wonder world -- Stone from the sky -- Traversing -- Periapsis -- The acid flats -- In aeternum -- Sweet water -- Form from a formless thing.
Mars was once similar to Earth, but today there are no rivers, no lakes, no oceans. Yet multiple spacecraft are circling Mars, sweeping over Terra Sabaea, Syrtis Major, the dunes of Elysium, and Mare Sirenum-- on the brink, perhaps, of a staggering find. Johnson tells the story of how she and other researchers have scoured Mars for signs of life. She interlaces her journey as a female scientist with tales of other seekers, to offer an unlikely natural history of a place where no human has ever set foot, while providing a vivid portrait of our quest to defy our isolation in the cosmos. -- adapted from jacket

Starts out pretty good. But then gets...better. And better.
Lot of interesting history of Mars exploration, made personal.
Lots of personal history, made poetry.
Beautiful read submitted by asjackson on July 3, 2024, 8:55am What a lovely book intertwining our historical fascination with Mars and personal memoir. The author reflects on what it is like to be a woman in the sciences while keeping an inspiring curiosity central to the story. Beautifully written!
